‘MOLESKINES’ is a project exploring the effects of short-term memory loss and how we can replace the mind with a notebook. Working with my father, the work considers his use of Moleskine notebooks to combat his memory loss after suffering a stroke 17 years ago. This project visually explores human interaction with space and how the objects and possessions we interact with are an extension of our bodies and minds. A notebook is an object which cannot forget, but as an object can be forgotten. This body of work explores notions of finding an imprinted personality in the space a subject interacts with and how our possessions can be a direct reflection of our self. I have always been interested in narrating a subject’s story though their surroundings by excluding the subject from the work, allowing the viewer to mentally build an image of their representation of that subject. The power relationship between subject, photographer and viewer has always influenced my practice and when exhibiting work, I have always considered people’s perceptions of a subject matter - playing with the narrative.
